Science

Woodland Flora Plant Explorer

Discover a range of plants found in the foreston a plant spotter trail. Discover parts of a flowering plant and discover the 'needs of a seed'. Can be made into a full or half day activity.
Curriculum Links: Identify and name a variety of common plants. Difference between Deciduous and Evergreen plants. Structure of a flowering plant. Explore local environment and habitat.  Learn the needs of a plant to grow.
SMSC: Experiencing nature at first hand, investigating the world around us and comparing environments. Fostering an appreciation of the environment and living things. 

Forest Investigators

A look at trees and how the forest is cared for. Can link to a comparison of Rainforests for a full day activity.
Curriculum Links:Identify and name a variety of common plants. Difference between Deciduous and Evergreen plants.  Explore local environment and habitat.

Who Dunn it?

Solving clues and using detective skills to solve the forest crime. Exploring concepts of omnivore, herbivore and carnivore linking into food chains and a chance to touch and feel some of the animals in the 'Discovery Centre'. Half day session can be linked to our living things session for a full day.
Curriculum Links: Identify and name a variety of common animals. Identify and name a variety of common animals that are omnivores, herbivores, carnivores. Describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals. Exploration of the local environment. Basic needs of animals for survival. Food Chains.
SMSC: Experiencing nature at first hand, investigating the world around us and comparing environments. Fostering an appreciation of the environment and living things. 

Living Things

Explore some of the smaller inhabitants of the forest habitat. You can choose from a minibeast hunt or pond dip. Combine both for a full days activity. These sessions can be linked to classification, food chains or habitat studies.
Curriculum Links: Investigate living, dead, never been alive. Explore habitats. Learn how to take care of animals taken from their local environment and the need to return them safely after study. Life Cycles. Food Chains.

Classification

Use first hand collected data from a leaf hunt, minibeast hunt or pond dip to and classify your finds. Make your own simple key to take home. A leaf sort would be half day, the others make a full days activity.
Curriculum Links: Identify and name a variety of living things using classifcation keys to assign them to groups. Look at the work of Carl Linnaeus.

Seasonal Detectives

Join us for a seasonal exploration  of the forest using a range of sensory and hands on activities to explore the season, visit the 'Discovery Centre' to discover the strategies of the forest animals to survive. A half day or full days activity.
Curriculum Links: Identify and name a variety of common animals.  Describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals. Exploration of the local environment. Basic needs of animals for survival. Food Chains

States of Matter

A look at everyday materials and their properties. We look at gases, liquids and solids and the variety of forms that can be found in the forest. We can also look at the water cycle and use a variety of experiments to explore concepts of evaporation, condensation to make a full days activity if required.
Curriculum Links: Distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made. Identify and describe the properties of a variety of everyday materials. Find how the shape of some solid objects can be changed. Explore solids, gases and liquids. Identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle.

Forest Rocks!

A full days look at rocks and their properties. We undertake a variety of tests to investigate permeability, solubility, texture and colour. Look at weathering and how fossils are made. Create your own Forest Fossils to take back to school.
Curriculum Links: Compare and group different rocks on the basis of their physiacal appearance and simple properties. Describe in simple terms how fossils are formed. Recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.
